IFRS Overview

This course explains the current requirements for the preparation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) financial statements including the many recent changes. For many years the International Accounting Standards was the rule set to follow. However, in 2001 the International Accounting Standards Committee chose to further develop the existing standards. The development of the rules has today become IFRS. Many countries are embracing the standards or some close variation of them. FTI Seminars now has specialized classes for Canadian IFRS training. As the economy becomes more and more globalized, accounting standards will continue to develop. It is more important than ever to stay on top of emerging trends and standards if companies are to succeed in the global marketplace. Competition aside, companies may someday find that they must comply with standards to do business at all. The IFRS overview will cover the standards and how they apply to your business.

Comparison of US GAAP with IFRS

As the global business community embraces IFRS, the United States is busy trying to converge with the international standards in a way that reduces the economic impact on US businesses. IFRS Update

This course includes coverage of all IFRS standards and interpretations issued in the past 18 months. It also includes coverage of all outstanding exposure drafts that will likely become new standards or interpretations in the near future. An update of the IFRS – US GAAP “convergence project” will also be highlighted including the recent SEC decision to allow foreign registrants to submit IFRS financials without reconciliation to US GAAP.

Accounting for Business Combinations with IFRS

IFRS 3R was released earlier this year. This standard is the result of the IFRS-US GAAP Convergence project. IFRS and US GAAP have made major changes in the accounting for business combinations, the consolidation of financial statements and other significant investments in the shares of other companies (associates, joint ventures, other equity method investments).

Accounting for Business Combinations addresses the essential elements in aciheving full compliance with IFRS 3. Additionally, this course addresses the new business combinations standards which will take effect July 1, 2009 and how your organization needs to prepare for them.
